2018 BMW 3 Series
320i / 328i / 330i / 340i (F30, 2012-2018)
High Attention

The F30 3 Series is one of the most satisfying driving experiences available used — but maintenance costs are above-average and must be budgeted honestly. The B48 4-cylinder is the most cost-effective engine. The N20 in 2012–2015 cars had timing chain issues; the B48 (2016+) resolved most of them. Budget $1,500–$3,000/year for maintenance on any used BMW. Pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist is non-negotiable.

Powertrain

Critical
The N20 2.0T engine used in 2012–2015 328i has a documented upper timing chain guide failure. Rattling at startup on a warm engine is a pre-failure sign. 2016+ B48 does not share this issue.
2016+ cars with B48: lower risk. For any 2012–2015: cold-start the engine and listen for startup rattle. Ask for timing chain service records.
Est. cost: $1,500–$3,000 timing chain / guide replacement Source: BMW N20 class action
High Attention
BMW electric water pumps and expansion tanks fail at 80k–120k miles — often without warning. Loss of coolant quickly leads to overheating.
Check coolant level and inspect expansion tank for cracks. Any low coolant without external leak = suspect water pump or tank.
Est. cost: $600–$1,200 water pump + thermostat Source: BMW electric water pump known failure
Monitor
BMW engines consume oil by design — 1 qt per 1,000 miles is considered "normal" by BMW. VANOS solenoid seals leak at 80k+ miles.
Pull oil dipstick before driving. Ask seller how often oil is added between changes.
Est. cost: $0–$500 VANOS solenoid seals Source: BMW consumption standard

Transmission

Monitor
BMW specifies "lifetime" fluid — but independent shops recommend change at 60k. Low-speed shudder indicates fluid degradation.
Test low-speed maneuvering for shudder.
Est. cost: $400–$600 fluid service Source: BMW independent shop consensus

Electronics

Monitor
F30 iDrive can accumulate module fault codes that are expensive to diagnose and repair.
Have the car scanned with BMW-compatible ISTA or BIMMERCODE before purchase. Any uncleared module faults are a negotiation point.
Est. cost: $200–$2,000+ depending on fault Source: Pre-purchase BMW scan standard

Chassis

High Attention
F30 control arm bushings and ball joints wear at 60k–80k miles — earlier than competitors.
Lift the car and inspect front suspension components, or have shop do it.
Est. cost: $800–$2,000 front suspension refresh Source: F30 common repair list

Documentation

Critical
Do not buy any used BMW without a pre-purchase inspection by a BMW-trained independent shop with ISTA access.
Budget $150–$200 for PPI. Non-negotiable on any F30.
Est. cost: $150–$200 PPI / $2,000–$15,000+ deferred repairs discovered Source: BMW ownership standard

NHTSA Recalls (verify completion via VIN)

18V-465
Crankshaft Sensor Firmware — Stall
Incorrect sensor firmware can stall the engine while driving. Covers certain 2018-2019 330i/330i xDrive/340i/340i xDrive (small population, ~5,309 across BMW/MINI). Dealer replaces the sensor.
21V-586
Diesel High-Pressure Fuel Pump (328d only)
HPFP failure can stall the engine — applies only to 2014-2018 328d/328d xDrive diesels. Dealer replaces the pump.
21V-907
Diesel EGR Cooler — Fire Risk (328d only)
EGR cooler can leak internally; coolant plus soot can smolder and melt the intake manifold. 2013-2018 328d variants; supersedes 18V-755 and was expanded again by 25V-700 (2025) — insist on the LATEST campaign closed by VIN.
