Watchful

The K2XX Sierra 1500 is mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 — shared platform, same engines, same known issues. The AFM (Active Fuel Management) cylinder deactivation lifter failure on the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines is the defining buyer risk. Decode position 8 of the VIN: U = 4.3L V6 (no AFM, lower risk), Z = 5.3L V8 (AFM, lifter risk), B = 6.2L V8 (AFM). Ask for oil change records regardless of engine.

Top concern
Engine / AFM lifter failure (5.3L + 6.2L)

Powertrain

High Attention
AFM deactivating lifters in the L83/L86 collapse at 60k–130k miles when oil changes were beyond 7,500 miles. Ticking + misfire + oil consumption = lifter failure. Cost is significant.
Cold-start the engine and listen for a persistent tick. Scan for P0300-series misfire codes. Pull service records — intervals beyond 7,500 miles = elevated risk.
Est. cost: $3,500–$7,000 full lifter replacement (16 lifters + cam) Source: K2XX well-documented failure pattern
High Attention
Even before lifter failure, AFM V8s can consume 1 quart per 2,000 miles — rings wear from oil starvation during 4-cylinder mode.
Check oil level before the test drive. Low on recent change = active consumption. Ask owner how often they add oil between changes.
Est. cost: $0 if early / $4,500–$7,000 for engine rebuild if rings are gone Source: GM AFM complaints
Monitor
6-speed 6L80/6L90 auto. Shudder at 30–45 mph under light throttle = contaminated torque converter fluid.
Test transmission shudder at light throttle on highway on-ramp.
Est. cost: $300–$500 flush / $2,500–$4,000 torque converter Source: 6L80 service pattern

Frame & Chassis

High Attention
K2XX trucks from Northeast/Midwest states can develop significant frame rust at rocker panels and cab corners.
Inspect all four cab corners and rocker panels with a flashlight and magnet. Surface rust is normal; through-rust on structural sections is a deal-breaker.
Est. cost: Walk away from through-rust on frame or structural body panels Source: Standard truck inspection

Electrical

Low Risk
2014 MyLink has known Bluetooth pairing and occasional freeze issues.
Pair phone and test audio + backup camera.
Est. cost: $0 software update Source: GM campaigns

Body

Monitor
Steel bed floors and tailgates rust from moisture under bed liners. Check under any aftermarket liner.
Remove the bed liner or check the edges. Any rust perforation on the bed floor is a negotiation point.
Est. cost: $0–$600 bed treatment / $800–$2,500 bed replacement Source: Standard truck inspection

Documentation

High Attention
Decode position 8 (engine: U=4.3L, Z=5.3L, B=6.2L) and position 10 (E=2014, F=2015). Run all four listed recalls.
Decode VIN at autovetting.com/decode and run nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Est. cost: Walk away from unresolved critical recalls Source: NHTSA

NHTSA Recalls (verify completion via VIN)

14V-246
Inner Tie Rod Not Tightened — Loss of Steering
2014 Sierra 1500 built May 25, 2013 through March 31, 2014: the tie rod may not have been properly tightened to the steering gear rack and can separate from it. NHTSA advised owners not to drive until inspected and to have the truck towed to the dealer. If a candidate falls inside that build window, confirm the repair before the test drive, not after. GM 14204.
14V-152
Transmission Oil Cooler Line — Fire
2014 Sierra 1500 with the MYC six-speed automatic: the transmission oil cooler line may not be securely seated in its fitting, and leaking fluid onto a hot surface can start a fire. GM 14121.
17V-414
Electric Power Steering Assist Loss
The big one on this generation — roughly 690,000 trucks. 2014 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 can temporarily lose electric power steering assist, most often during low-speed turns, and then have it return abruptly. EPS module software update. GM 17276.
15V-640
Ignition Lock Actuator Bind
2014-2015 Sierra built January 24 through February 26, 2014: the ignition lock actuator can bind, sticking the key in START and then snapping back to ACCESSORY — losing engine, steering and brake assist, with the airbags disabled. GM 15573.
19V-761
Brake Module Software — Unintended Braking
2014-2018 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L, a 3.08 rear axle and four-wheel drive: if a wheel-speed sensor fails, the electronic brake control module can activate driveline protection and brake the wheel opposite the failed sensor, pulling the truck to one side. GM N192261050.
19V-645
Vacuum Pump — Reduced Brake Assist
2014-2018 Sierra: vacuum pump output can decline over time, raising pedal effort and extending stopping distance. Brake control module reprogramming. GM N192268490.
16V-651
Airbag Sensing Module Software — Non-Deployment
2014-2017 Sierra 1500: certain driving conditions can send the sensing and diagnostic module into a diagnostic test, during which the frontal airbags and seat belt pretensioners would not deploy in a crash. GM 16007.
17V-437
Airbag Module Software — Incomplete 16V-651 Remedy
GM re-recalled trucks that did not receive the complete software update under 16V-651. A Sierra whose paperwork shows 16V-651 closed can still be open on this one. GM 17287.
16V-209
Driver Seat Belt Tensioner Cable Fatigue
2014-2015 Sierra 1500 built January 29, 2013 through January 21, 2015: sliding across the tensioner cable while entering the truck can fatigue and separate it, leaving the driver improperly restrained. GM 15822.
21V-245
Seat Belt Pretensioner — Incorrect Replacement Cable
A recall of the repair: some trucks received the wrong replacement tensioner cable assembly under 16V-209 or a later repair, and it can fatigue and break the same way. Verify both campaigns, not just the first. GM N212330040.
14V-446
Front Seat Hook Bracket Weld
2014-2015 Sierra: an incomplete weld on the seat hook bracket assembly means a front seat may not stay secured in a crash. GM 14340.
14V-374
Transfer Case Shifts to Neutral
2014-2015 Sierra: an electrical signal short can shift the transfer case into neutral with no driver input — a rollaway risk when parked, and a loss of drive power when moving. GM 14192.
14V-301
Base Radio Failure — No Warning Chimes
2014-2015 Sierra with the base radio and internal amplifier: if the radio goes inoperative there is no key-in-ignition door chime and no seat belt warning, failing FMVSS 114 and 208. Radio software update. GM 14315.
13V-488
Front Seatback Play
2014 Sierra 1500 built August 1 through September 10, 2013 with manual reclining seatbacks: play in the seatback means the head restraint may not protect an occupant in a rear impact (FMVSS 202a). GM 13323.
13V-315
Passenger Airbag Inflator Weld
Very narrow — 2014 Sierra built June 4 through June 30, 2013. Welding on the passenger airbag inflator can fracture on deployment, venting gas behind the instrument panel instead of into the bag. GM 13230.
18V-267
Kidde Fire Extinguisher (accessory equipment)
An equipment campaign covering plastic-handle and push-button Kidde fire extinguishers supplied with a range of GM trucks and vans: the extinguisher can clog, or the nozzle can detach with enough force to injure. Only relevant if the truck still carries the factory-supplied unit. GM 18146.
