Watchful

This is the last MK6 Jetta, not the first MK7 — the A7 car, its 228hp GLI and its 8-speed automatic all arrive for 2019, so read any '2018-2021 Jetta' advice with that in mind. It is a well-built, plain compact sedan whose real buyer risks are the EA211 timing chain tensioner and deferred oil service. Note the transmission: S/SE/SEL cars use an Aisin six-speed torque-converter automatic, not a DSG — only the GLI has a dual-clutch, and it is the wet-clutch DQ250. No Jetta of this year is in any Takata airbag campaign.

Powertrain

Monitor
Most 2018 Jettas do not have a DSG at all. S/SE/SEL cars use the Aisin six-speed torque-converter automatic, or a five-speed manual. Only the GLI has a dual-clutch, and it is the wet-clutch DQ250 — not the dry-clutch DQ200 that produces the well-known low-speed shudder, which was never fitted to a US Jetta. Advice about "the 2018 Jetta DSG" is describing a car this is not.
Confirm which transmission the car has before pricing any repair. GLI: test stop-and-go under 15 mph for shudder. Aisin car: test for flare or gear hunting between 2nd and 3rd from cold.
Est. cost: $150–$250 Aisin fluid service / $350–$600 DQ250 DSG service (GLI only) Source: VW model-year specifications
Monitor
EA211 timing chain tensioner wear past 100k miles with extended oil intervals. Cold-start rattle check.
Cold-start the engine — sustained rattle past 10 seconds = tensioner wear.
Est. cost: $600–$1,400 timing chain kit Source: EA211 service pattern

Suspension

Monitor
Control arm bushings wear at 80k–100k miles, causing steering wander.
Test straight-line tracking at highway speed.
Est. cost: $400–$800 control arms Source: VW suspension wear

Electrical

Low Risk
MIB2 has known CarPlay drop issues. Software updates help.
Test wired CarPlay and all functions.
Est. cost: $0 update Source: VW campaigns

Body

Monitor
Sunroof drains clog with debris causing interior water intrusion at A-pillar.
Check headliner and A-pillar for water stains.
Est. cost: $100–$300 drain cleaning Source: Common VW complaint

Documentation

Monitor
Volkswagen Takata inflator campaigns cover the Jetta only through roughly MY2014, and the later desiccated-inflator recall NHTSA negotiated with VW (24V-834) covers the Beetle and the Passat — not the Jetta, in any year. A listing or a checklist telling you this Jetta has an outstanding Takata airbag is wrong. Oil and transmission service history is what actually matters here.
Request oil-change receipts, and on a GLI the DSG service record. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and require whatever is genuinely open to be closed before purchase.
Est. cost: Walk away from an unserviced GLI DSG Source: VW recall 24V-834 scope / NHTSA
