Monitor

The XC40 is Volvo's entry luxury compact SUV — excellent safety ratings, well-designed interior, and modern Drive-E four-cylinder powertrains. Main buyer risks are the DCT/transmission shudder on T4 models, oil consumption on some early T5 units, and — critically — Volvo's expensive dealership maintenance requirements. Deferred maintenance on a Volvo compounds fast. Only buy with verified Volvo service history.

Some early T5-powered XC40s had oil consumption complaints. Volvo updated piston rings. Check dipstick.
Check dipstick color and level. Any >1 qt per 3,000 miles = concern.
Est. cost: $0–$2,000 Source: Volvo T5 pattern / TSBs
Low Risk

Est. cost: $200–$300 fluid service Source: Aisin 8AT standard
Monitor
T4 models use a 7-speed DCT that can shudder at low speed. Software updates and clutch fluid service address most cases.

Maintenance Cost Warning

High Risk without records
Volvo maintenance at a dealer averages $700–$1,200 per service interval. Buyers who used non-Volvo shops can void warranties and miss platform-specific TSBs.
Request all Volvo dealer service printouts. Gap in records = factor $1,000–$2,000 into offer for catch-up maintenance.

Electrical & Tech

NHTSA Recalls (verify completion via VIN)

18V-554
Brake Pedal Not Riveted - stop-driving recall
2019 XC40, an estimated 71 cars: brake pedals may not have been riveted correctly and can move out of position, reducing braking performance. Volvo told owners to stop driving; cars were inspected where they sat or towed in and the pedal replaced. Tiny campaign, but the only stop-driving order on this car - confirm by VIN that it was closed. Volvo R59899.
18V-535
Missing Rear Seat-Back Lock Strikers
2019 XC40: the rear seat back can be missing its lock strikers, letting it move forward under hard braking or in a crash. Dealer inspects and installs the missing strikers. Check it with the seat folded and latched rather than taking the paperwork for it. Volvo R89898.
20V-144
Automatic Emergency Braking May Not Engage
2019-2020 XC40 among nine Volvo lines: a software and hardware incompatibility in the Active Safety Domain Master means the automatic emergency braking system may fail to detect an obstacle or engage as intended. Software update at the dealer. Volvo R29998.
18V-800
Connectivity Module - no GPS to emergency services
2017-2019 XC40 among eight Volvo lines: a Vehicle Connectivity Module software error can leave the telematics and driver-support systems malfunctioning so the car does not send its GPS position to emergency responders after a crash. Software fix. Nothing a test drive reveals - it has to be checked by VIN. Volvo R39917.
