2018 Chevrolet Tahoe
LS / LT / Premier (K2XX body-on-frame, 2015-2020)
High Attention

K2XX Tahoe is a full-size body-on-frame 3-row SUV — genuine towing capacity (8,600 lbs) and large-family utility at a fraction of a new model price. But ALL K2XX Tahoes have the 5.3L or 6.2L V8 with AFM cylinder deactivation — and both are subject to the same lifter failure pattern as the Silverado. Every Tahoe buyer must verify AFM lifter status. Budget for a $3,500–$7,000 repair if not already addressed.

AFM lifter failure (5.3L and 6.2L)

Powertrain

Critical
The 5.3L L83 and 6.2L L86 both use AFM. Under the extra load of a 5,800 lb SUV, AFM lifters fail at 60k–100k miles. This is not an "if" question on used Tahoes — it's a "when and was it already fixed" question.
Cold-start the engine and listen for persistent ticking. Scan for P0300-series codes. Verify oil change records and whether AFM-deletion has been performed.
Est. cost: $3,500–$7,000 lifter replacement (all 16) or AFM delete kit + tune Source: K2XX AFM failure pattern
Monitor
Shudder at 30–45 mph light throttle = torque converter fluid contamination.
Test light throttle at highway speed.
Est. cost: $350–$550 fluid flush Source: 6L80 service pattern

Frame & Body

High Attention
Full-size BOF SUVs from salt-belt states develop frame rust on cross-members and cab corners.
Full undercarriage inspection with flashlight and magnet.
Est. cost: Walk away from through-rust on structural sections Source: Truck inspection standard

Third Row & Interior

Low Risk
Fold-flat third-row mechanism can jam on high-mileage Tahoes.
Fold and unfold third row fully.
Est. cost: $150–$400 mechanism repair Source: Common wear

Electrical

Low Risk
Known Bluetooth and freeze issues. Software updates available.
Test all infotainment functions.
Est. cost: $0 update Source: GM campaigns

Documentation

Critical
Has AFM been deleted? Are lifters known to be original? These are the questions that determine the Tahoe's value.
Run VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Require AFM service documentation or delete confirmation.
Est. cost: Walk away from Tahoe without AFM history documentation Source: NHTSA + GM service records
