The 2nd-gen Trax is a complete redesign and a massive improvement — larger, sleeker, better equipped, and significantly cheaper than the competition. The 1.2T 3-cylinder is the same engine from the Trailblazer. Very young vehicle with no established failure modes. Exceptional value for money in the subcompact SUV segment.

What the VIN tells you

Every 2024 Trax uses the same engine — the 1.2L LIH turbocharged three-cylinder (137 hp) paired with a conventional 6-speed automatic — so there is no engine family to fork on in the VIN. (Note: the 2nd-gen Trax does not use a CVT, despite a common misconception.) The 8th VIN digit confirms the engine/restraint configuration, but since the powertrain is identical across LS, LT, RS and ACTIV, the more useful decode is position 10 for model year: R = 2024. The single most important VIN check on a vehicle this new is the recall lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls — confirm any open campaigns are closed before purchase.
