Watchful

The LC Challenger is the most American muscle car you can buy used — the platform is virtually unchanged since 2008, which means proven reliability and low-cost parts. The 5.7L Hemi MDS lifter failure is the same issue as the Charger and Ram 1500. Hellcat buyers: expect high-mileage brake and tire wear from track use. The 3.6L V6 is the most trouble-free option and still moves quickly.

Top concern
Hemi MDS lifters / abuse history on performance models

Powertrain

High Attention
MDS deactivating lifters fail at 60k–120k miles on neglected oil schedules.
Cold-start the engine and listen for persistent ticking. Scan for P0300-series codes. Verify oil interval records.
Est. cost: $3,000–$6,500 lifter replacement Source: Hemi MDS documented pattern
Monitor
Shudder at 25–45 mph light throttle = torque converter fluid contamination on the 8-speed.
Test light throttle at highway speed.
Est. cost: $350–$550 fluid flush Source: 8HP70 service pattern

Performance/Abuse Checks

High Attention
Performance trims are frequently launched hard. Worn differentials, clutch pack, and driveline indicate abuse.
Inspect tires for uneven wear. Listen for rear differential whine at speed. Check for any drag strip timing slips in the glovebox.
Est. cost: $1,200–$3,500 differential service / rebuild Source: Performance car inspection standard

Brakes

Monitor
High-performance brakes wear rapidly when driven hard.
Inspect pad thickness and feel for rotor vibration during test stops.
Est. cost: $400–$1,200 full brake service Source: Standard inspection

Electrical

Low Risk
Same UConnect system as Charger — freeze and GPS antenna issues.
Test all infotainment functions.
Est. cost: $0 update / $500–$1,500 unit Source: Dodge campaigns

Documentation

Critical
FCA's Takata inflator campaign covers the 2008–2014 Challenger, so a 2018 is outside it — which means the airbag paperwork some sellers wave around is for a different car. What actually needs auditing here is how the car was used: launch-control abuse, track days and drag-strip time slips all shorten driveline life on the performance trims.
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for the campaigns that do apply, then demand full service history on any Scat Pack or Hellcat. Walk away from a performance trim with no records.
Est. cost: Walk away from abuse-evident cars — driveline repairs run into five figures Source: FCA Takata affected-model list (mopar.com), verified 2026-08-09
