Watchful

The WD Durango is a body-on-frame 3-row SUV that survives on tow capacity (7,400–8,700 lbs) and V8 power. The 5.7L Hemi MDS lifters are the same failure mode as the Ram 1500 and Charger — same oil-interval dependency, same $3,000–$6,500 repair cost. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 avoids MDS. TIPM electrical module failures are less common on WD than WK2 but still possible.

Powertrain

High Attention
MDS deactivating lifters on the 5.7L Hemi fail at 60k–120k miles on neglected oil schedules.
Cold-start ticking + P0300 scan + oil interval records.
Est. cost: $3,000–$6,500 lifter replacement Source: Hemi MDS documented pattern
Monitor
Light-throttle shudder at 25–45 mph = torque converter fluid contamination.
Test at highway light throttle.
Est. cost: $350–$550 fluid flush Source: 8HP70 service pattern

Frame & Tow

Monitor
Durangos used for heavy towing accumulate drivetrain wear faster. Check hitch receiver rust and brake wear.
Inspect hitch receiver area for rust. Test trailer brake controller if equipped.
Est. cost: $0–$1,500 depending on wear found Source: Tow vehicle inspection standard

Electrical

Low Risk
UConnect is generally reliable on WD. Test all functions.
Test all infotainment.
Est. cost: $0 update Source: Dodge campaigns

Suspension

Monitor
LCA bushings wear at 80k+ miles causing handling vagueness.
Test steering at highway speed for wander.
Est. cost: $400–$800 per side Source: WD wear pattern

Documentation

Critical
FCA's Takata inflator campaign covers the 2004–2009 Durango — the previous, Dakota-based truck — not this WD-generation one. The genuine walk-away item here is oil-interval history on the Hemi: MDS lifter and camshaft failure is the characteristic expensive fault and it follows neglected oil changes.
Require complete Hemi service history, then run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for the campaigns that do apply. An oil-neglected Hemi is a walk-away no matter how clean the body is.
Est. cost: Walk away from an oil-neglected Hemi — lifter/cam repair runs $4,000–$7,000 Source: FCA Takata affected-model list (mopar.com), verified 2026-08-09
