Watchful

The KL Cherokee is a comfortable, capable crossover with a unique 9-speed transmission that had significant early problems. The 9-speed was substantially revised through TSB updates and by 2018 is much improved, but always test the transmission carefully. The 2.4L Tigershark has documented oil consumption. The 3.2L V6 is the most reliable powertrain in this generation.

Powertrain

High Attention
Early KL Cherokee 9-speed had severe hunting and refusal to upshift. By 2018, major TSB updates improved behavior significantly but shudder at 30–45 mph is still possible.
Test the transmission extensively — all speed ranges, light throttle at highway, stop-and-go, and parking lot maneuvers. Any hesitation, hunting, or refusal to shift = transmission issue.
Est. cost: $350–$600 fluid + calibration / $4,500–$7,500 transmission replacement Source: ZF 948TE revision history
High Attention
The Tigershark I4 has documented oil consumption — some engines consume 1 qt per 1,000 miles.
Pull dipstick before any test drive. Low on recent change = active consumption.
Est. cost: $0 if early / $5,000–$7,500 engine rebuild Source: Chrysler Tigershark documented issue

Electrical

Low Risk
UConnect 8.4 is generally good. Occasional Bluetooth pairing failures.
Test all infotainment functions.
Est. cost: $0 update Source: Jeep campaigns

Suspension

Monitor
Lower control arm bushings wear at 80k+ miles causing handling vagueness.
Test steering feel at highway speed for any wander.
Est. cost: $400–$800 per side Source: KL Cherokee wear pattern

AWD

Monitor
AWD coupling fluid service required every 30–45k miles.
Test cornering at highway speed for shudder.
Est. cost: $150–$300 service / $800–$1,500 coupling Source: Jeep AWD standard

Documentation

High Attention
Transmission service records and oil change history are the key documents on KL Cherokee.
Run VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Request all service records.
Est. cost: Walk away from Tigershark without service history Source: NHTSA
