2018 Jeep Wrangler
Sport / Sport S / Sahara / Rubicon (JL, 2018–present) — note 2018 is a two-Wrangler year: the outgoing JK was sold alongside the JL as the "Wrangler JK"
Monitor

The JL Wrangler is Jeep's best Wrangler yet — improved highway manners, better fuel economy, and all the off-road capability. First check which car you are actually looking at: 2018 is the changeover year, and Jeep sold the previous-generation JK alongside the new JL for the whole model year. The 3.6L Pentastar is the proven choice; the 2.0T has oil dilution concerns in cold climates. A 2018 cannot be an EcoDiesel — that engine arrives for 2020. The main risks are modification history (JLs are heavily modified), death wobble on lifted examples, and potential overheating on the 2.0T under sustained low-speed crawling. Factory-stock Wranglers with documented maintenance are strong buys.

Recall — Check First

High Risk — Check VIN
AutoVetting could not confirm an NHTSA campaign number for a JL fuel-tank-vent leak, so none is asserted here. Fuel-system campaign coverage varies by build date — run the VIN.
Run VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Confirm closed.
Est. cost: Free dealer repair where a campaign applies Source: NHTSA recalls (VIN lookup)

Death Wobble (Lifted / Modified)

High Risk if lifted
Death wobble is a violent front-end shimmy triggered above 45 mph, common on lifted/modified JLs with worn track bar or steering components. Can occur on stock vehicles too but is rarer.
Inspect front suspension: check track bar bolts (should be tight), look for aftermarket lift components. Test at highway speed — any shimmy = investigate all steering/suspension components.
Est. cost: $200–$1,500 depending on cause Source: Jeep JL death wobble pattern

Engine

Low Risk
The 3.6L Pentastar has been refined over many years. Minor valve train tick at startup is normal and disappears warm. Rock-solid reliability when stock.
Cold-start: minor valve tick is normal and goes away. Any persistent knock = inspect.
Est. cost: Routine maintenance Source: Chrysler Pentastar reliability data
Monitor
The 2.0T Hurricane-based engine in the JL had oil dilution reports in cold climates due to extended warm-up cycles. Check oil on a cold-climate vehicle.
Check oil level and smell. Oil level above MAX = gasoline dilution. Cold-climate cars warrant extra scrutiny.
Est. cost: $0 (warm climate); PCM update available Source: Jeep 2.0T TSB

Modification History

Monitor
Lifted JLs require proportionally upgraded steering and brake components. Check for professional installation with appropriate parts for the lift height.
Note lift height (stock = 9.1" ground clearance). Any lift >2" should have upgraded track bar. Ask for installer info.

Monitor
Inspect skid plates, differential housings, and rocker panels for rock strike damage.
Look under the vehicle: bent skid plates, cracked diff housings, or rocker damage = negotiate.

Documentation

Monitor
For a Wrangler, what's been done to it off-road matters as much as oil change history.
Request both maintenance records and any modification documentation (lift kit brand/installer, previous off-road use).
