2019 Lexus RX350
Base / F SPORT / Executive / Premium (4th gen AL20, 2016–2022)
Low Risk

The AL20 RX350 is among the most reliable luxury midsize SUVs available. The 2GR-FKS direct-injection V6 is proven and Toyota/Lexus have eliminated the head gasket issues of earlier engines. The 8-speed automatic is smooth and durable. GDI carbon buildup on intake valves is the main watch item on high-mileage examples. The RX is not on Lexus’s Takata affected-model list; a VIN recall check is still worth doing. Outstanding 3-row (RX350L) or 5-seat choice.

Recall

Monitor
The RX appears nowhere on the Lexus Takata affected-model list — that list runs IS, IS C, IS-F, ES 350, GX460, LFA and SC 430, and stops well before 2019 on all of them. Run the VIN regardless; the AL20 has campaigns of its own.
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you go and see the car. Any campaign that comes back open = do not purchase until the dealer has closed it. Recall work is always free, and completion is logged against the VIN, so a seller's word is not evidence.

Powertrain

Low Risk
Direct-injection V6 is reliable but can accumulate carbon on intake valves at 70k+ miles. Test idle smoothness.
Cold-start idle smoothness. Any rough idle on 80k+ example = carbon service possible.
Est. cost: $400–$700 carbon clean if needed Source: Lexus 3.5L GDI pattern
Low Risk
Smooth and reliable. Change Toyota WS fluid every 60k.
Test all gears. Smooth shifts expected.
Est. cost: $200 fluid service Source: Lexus drivetrain standard

AWD & Suspension

Low Risk
AWD coupling fluid every 30k. Tight turn test in parking lot.
Parking lot tight turn — no vibration or binding.
Est. cost: $150–$200 service Source: Lexus AWD standard

Documentation

Low Risk
Lexus buyers maintain their vehicles well. Records typically available.
Request Lexus dealer records. Carbon build-up risk increases with poor oil history.

Severity: Informational
The RX appears nowhere on the Lexus Takata affected-model list, which runs IS, IS C, IS-F, ES 350, GX460, LFA and SC 430. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for the campaigns that do apply. Remedy: Any open campaign is repaired free by a dealer.

What the VIN tells you

For the RX350 the 8th VIN digit is ‘Z’ = the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 (295 hp), the only engine this badge carried across the whole AL20 generation — 5-seat RX350 or 3-row RX350L, FWD or AWD (Toyota VIN-code tables; JDM Engine Direct 2GR-FKS listing). There is no four-cylinder or turbo RX350 to confuse it with. The hybrid is a separate model, the RX450h, which uses the 2GR-FXS Atkinson V6 plus an electric drive system and carries a different VIN engine character — so ‘RX350 hybrid’ is a contradiction; make sure the badge and the 8th digit agree. Decode the full VIN at autovetting.com/decode and run the VIN for open recalls before purchase — the RX is not on Lexus’s Takata affected-model list.
