Monitor

2020 is the final year of the 1st-generation X156 GLA — the hatchback-shaped car on the MFA platform, not the taller H247 that replaced it for 2021. Expect COMAND infotainment rather than MBUX, and the M270 2.0T rather than the M260. Main buyer risks: the 7G-DCT dual-clutch can shudder at low speeds (known issue); oil leaks from the M270 valve cover and turbo oil-feed line at high mileage; and Mercedes maintenance costs on a car that sells cheap but does not service cheap. Only buy with complete Mercedes-Benz service records. On recalls, NHTSA lists four campaigns for a MY2020 GLA and the one to confirm by VIN is 21V-961, a fuel-rail and injector fuel-leak fire campaign covering only 139 cars built in a narrow window - rare, but VIN-specific; the other three are eCall and communication-module software items with free or over-the-air remedies.

Transmission

High Risk
The Mercedes 8G-DCT dual-clutch transmission in GLA 250 is known for shudder and jerkiness at 15–25 mph during light throttle engagement. Software and mechatronic unit updates address some cases; severe cases need TCU replacement.
Test slow city driving at 15–25 mph. Any shudder or jerk = factor into offer. Request TCU software update history.
Est. cost: $0 software; $2,000–$5,000 mechatronic unit Source: Mercedes 7G-DCT pattern

Engine

Monitor
Plastic valve covers on M260 can develop oil leaks at 60k+ miles.
Inspect valve cover area for oil seeps with warm engine.
Est. cost: $400–$700 Source: Mercedes M270 pattern
High Risk without records
Mercedes specifies 10,000-mile oil changes but the turbo benefits from shorter 5,000–7,500-mile intervals.
Request all MB service records.
Est. cost: $800–$1,500 per MB service Source: AutoVetting editorial

COMAND & Technology

Low Risk
MBUX is one of the better luxury infotainment systems. Test "Hey Mercedes" and all touch/physical controls.
Test full infotainment and CarPlay/Android Auto pairing.
Est. cost: $0 Source: Standard check

NHTSA Recalls (verify completion via VIN)

21V-961
Severity: Critical - fuel leak and fire
Particles trapped between the fuel rail and the fuel injectors during manufacturing can cause a fuel leak, and a leak near a hot engine or exhaust component can start a fire. Only 139 units, so this is VIN-specific rather than fleet-wide; report received 2021-12-13, owner letters mailed 2022-04-22, MBUSA recall 2022030003. The NHTSA record carries a literal MERCEDES-BENZ / GLA 250 / 2020 row. Remedy: fuel rail and fuel injectors replaced free by a dealer.
21V-058
Severity: High - emergency call sends the wrong location
Communication-module software can transmit the wrong vehicle position to the eCall emergency system after a crash, which can send responders to the wrong place. 1,292,258 units across 2016-2021 Mercedes-Benz models; report received 2021-02-05. Confirmed on the AMG GLA 45 for 2020 in NHTSA's own campaign record. Remedy: communication-module software updated by a dealer or over the air, free.
22V-365
Severity: High - emergency call disabled
A SIM-card software error can cause a mobile-network connection failure that disables eCall, so occupants may not be able to reach the emergency call centre. 242,722 units across 2017-2022 Mercedes-Benz models; report received 2022-05-20. NHTSA's campaign record lists the AMG GLA 45 for 2019, 2020 and 2021. Remedy: communication-module software updated over the air or by a dealer, free.
21V-072
Severity: Monitor - emergency call left switched off
The communication module may have been deactivated during a service visit and never switched back on, leaving eCall inoperative. Only 67 units; report received 2021-02-12. The NHTSA record carries a literal MERCEDES-BENZ / GLA 250 / 2020 row. Remedy: dealer inspects the communication module and activates it if necessary, free.
