The W167 GLE is a generational improvement — new MBUX infotainment, optional E-Active Body Control suspension, and a modern platform. The M264 2.0T is capable but struggles on this heavy vehicle. The M256 inline-six with EQ Boost mild hybrid is the superior choice. Main risks: air suspension compressor failure on Airmatic-equipped units, 48V EQ Boost system teething issues, and Mercedes maintenance costs. Only buy with complete MB service records.

Air Suspension

High Risk at 60k+
Airmatic (standard on most GLE 4MATIC) compressors fail, causing sagging corners. One of the most common W167 repairs.
Park overnight, check all four corners are level in the morning. Any corner lower = compressor failing.
Est. cost: $1,500–$3,000 compressor replacement Source: Mercedes W167 air suspension pattern

Powertrain

Monitor
The 2.0T 4-cylinder in a 4,800-lb GLE works hard. Oil change every 5,000 miles critical for turbo longevity.
Check oil level and color. Test full-throttle acceleration — any hesitation or smoke = turbo wear.
Est. cost: Higher maintenance cost Source: Mercedes M264 in GLE context
Low Risk
The inline-six with integrated starter-generator is smoother and more powerful. 48V system adds mild hybrid function.
Test all driving modes. Confirm 48V system has no warning lights.
