Tradesman / SLT / Big Horn / Laramie (DS platform, sold as the Classic 2019-2024)
Watchful
The Ram 1500 Classic is the DS-platform prior-gen Ram, sold alongside the newer DT in 2019–2021. It's a proven, simpler platform without eTorque complexity. The 5.7L Hemi has the same MDS lifter failure risk as in older Rams. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the lower-risk choice. Coil-spring rear suspension and reasonable reliability make this a strong value truck at lower prices than the DT.

What the VIN tells you
On the Ram 1500 Classic (DS platform) the engine choice is the whole inspection story, and the 8th VIN digit names it: G = 3.6L Pentastar V6 (305 hp — the lower-risk, lower-cost choice with no cylinder deactivation); T = 5.7L Hemi V8 (395 hp — the one to scrutinize, because its MDS cylinder-deactivation lifters can fail at 60k–120k miles on neglected oil, a $3,000–$6,500 repair). The Classic is the prior-generation body sold new alongside the redesigned DT through 2019–2021, so it does NOT get the DT's eTorque mild-hybrid system — a Classic Hemi is the simpler, non-eTorque 5.7. Don't trust the tailgate badge alone; decode the full VIN at autovetting.com/decode (NHTSA's vPIC database returns the engine family) before you negotiate. The 10th VIN digit gives the model year: K=2019, L=2020, M=2021.
