2018 Subaru Crosstrek
2.0i / Premium / Limited (GT, 2nd gen, 2018-2023)
Low Risk

2nd-gen Crosstrek (GT platform, 2018+) is the best Crosstrek Subaru has made. Improved ride, better reliability than SH-gen, and the FB20 engine avoids the EJ head-gasket failures. Oil consumption check at 80k+ miles is still good practice on any Subaru. EyeSight windshield replacement is expensive — inspect carefully.

Top concern
FB20 oil consumption / EyeSight windshield cost

Powertrain

Monitor
FB20 can consume up to 1 qt per 1,000 miles above 80k miles with extended intervals.
Pull dipstick before driving. Below MIN on recent change = consumption concern.
Est. cost: $0 if early / $4,500–$7,000 engine rebuild Source: Subaru FB-series pattern
Monitor
CVT requires fluid change every 30k–40k miles. Shudder under moderate acceleration = overdue.
Test highway acceleration for any shudder.
Est. cost: $250–$450 service / $3,500–$5,500 CVT Source: Subaru CVT service interval

Safety Systems

Monitor
EyeSight recalibration required after any windshield replacement — doubles the cost.
Inspect top-center windshield zone for chips, cracks, or repair residue.
Est. cost: $1,200–$2,200 windshield + EyeSight recal Source: Subaru service requirement

Suspension

Low Risk
Struts wear at 80k–100k miles — minor clunk over rough pavement.
Bounce each front corner.
Est. cost: $400–$700 per strut Source: Common wear

Body

Monitor
Subaru Crosstreks from Northeast/Midwest develop rocker rust early.
Inspect both rockers with flashlight.
Est. cost: $200–$1,500 depending on severity Source: Subaru rust pattern

Documentation

Monitor
Verify oil level has not dropped since last change. Run nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Check dipstick + recall check.
Est. cost: Standard Source: NHTSA

What the VIN tells you

One engine for 2018: the direct-injection FB20D boxer-4 (152 hp), so the 8th VIN digit does not fork the engine — on these FB-family Subarus it encodes the emissions market, not the powertrain. The Crosstrek Hybrid (FB20 + a Toyota-sourced plug-in system, 148 hp combined) did not arrive until the 2019 model year and was a CARB-state compliance car, so a 2018 is gas-only — ignore any 'hybrid/PHEV' claim on a 2018 VIN. The real decode is the transmission: 2.0i base and Premium came standard with a 6-speed manual (Lineartronic CVT optional); Limited was CVT-only.
