Pre-purchase inspection · 2021 Tesla Model Y
Battery capacity degrades with age and cycle count. 2021+ Model Y should show less than 10% degradation under 50k miles.
Charge to 90% and compare range estimate to EPA rating. More than 12% loss = negotiate.
Est. cost: $8,000–$16,000 HV battery if severely degraded

2021+ Model Y has a heat pump that improves cold-weather range vs. resistive heater. Verify heat pump is installed (pre-2021 Model Y did not have it).
Verify build date is 2021 or later for heat pump inclusion.
Est. cost: N/A — verify by build date

Some early Model Y builds had rear drive unit whine. 2021+ Giga Texas builds generally resolved this.
Highway speed listen test for any speed-proportional whine.
Est. cost: $2,500–$5,000 drive unit if confirmed

Early Model Y had worse panel gaps than Model 3. 2021+ Giga Texas production improved this.
Inspect all body panel gaps — focus on the rear hatch and door edges.
Est. cost: Cosmetic only / $0–$500 adjustment

Roof seals on some Model Y builds fail — water enters at rear corners.
Check headliner at rear corners for water stains or moisture.
Est. cost: $300–$800 seal replacement / $1,500–$3,000 headliner if damaged

Tesla service history visible through seller's Tesla app — request screenshot. Three recalls possible.
Request Tesla app service history. Run nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Est. cost: Walk away from >15% battery degradation without price adjustment

Seat Belt Reminder (FMVSS 208)
Seat belt warning light/chime may not activate for an unbelted driver — free firmware update. Covers 2020–2023 Model Y; verify by VIN.
Unlike a gas car, the Model Y's powertrain is read from the 8th VIN digit (drive unit), not an engine-family code — the 7th digit is just fuel type (E = electric) and is identical on every car. For the 2021 Model Y the 8th digit commonly reports D = single-motor RWD (Standard Range), E = dual-motor AWD (Long Range), and F = dual-motor AWD (Performance); confirm the exact letter at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov rather than trusting the badge. This matters because the single-motor RWD Standard Range was only sold off-menu for a few weeks in early 2021, so a 'D' 2021 car is rare — most 2021 Model Ys decode to E (Long Range) or F (Performance). The 10th digit (M = 2021) confirms the model year and therefore the standard heat pump; 2021 cars were Fremont-built, before the Giga-Texas line came online.
