Monitor

The 6th-gen Bronco is an enthusiast-grade off-road SUV with a first-year production run that had significant quality issues. 2021 models particularly had soft-top defects, 7-speed manual transmission recalls, HVAC duct failures, and paint quality complaints. 2022+ models are considerably better. If buying a 2021, verify all known recalls are closed. NHTSA lists 20 campaigns against the 2021 model year, and seven of them are the same rearview-camera defect reopened between 2022 and 2026 — so ‘the camera recall was done’ is not an answer; ask which one. The two that cost real money if open are 24V-635 (2.7L EcoBoost intake valve fracture, engine failure) and 26V-299, the molded-in-color hardtop campaign. The 2.3L EcoBoost is well-proven; the 2.7L is more capable but at higher maintenance cost.

Recalls — Check First (2021 especially)

High Risk — Check 7MT VINs
Owners have reported clutch and gearshift trouble on 2021 Bronco trucks with the 7-speed manual. AutoVetting could not confirm an NHTSA campaign for it, so this is an inspection item rather than a recall — the VIN lookup is the source of truth for open campaigns.
Run VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If 7-speed manual, confirm clutch recall is closed.

Monitor
Early production 2021 Broncos had HVAC duct routing issues that could cause reduced airflow or noise.
Test all climate settings including defrost. Any weak zones indicate duct issue.
Est. cost: $0–$400 Source: Ford TSB 21-2241

Soft Top / Hard Top

High Risk on 2021 Soft-Top
The Bronco MIC (molded-in-color) hardtop and soft tops on 2021 models had widespread water intrusion, panel cracking (hardtop), and sealing failures. Ford replaced defective tops under warranty.
Inspect headliner and cargo floor for water stains or mold. Test top seals all around with a water spray test before purchase.
Est. cost: Free warranty replacement (if in warranty); $2,000–$5,000 post-warranty Source: Ford Bronco MIC hardtop recall / TSBs
Monitor
Removable doors and roof panels on all Broncos can develop wind noise if latches or seals are worn.
Test all door latch engagements. Check for wind noise at highway speeds.
Est. cost: $50–$200 per door seal Source: Bronco owner community

Powertrain

Low Risk
The Gen 3 2.3L EcoBoost is proven in Explorer, Mustang, and Ranger. Turbo seals are the main long-term watch item.
Check for blue smoke at startup or under boost. Test all driving modes.
Est. cost: Routine maintenance Source: Ford 2.3L EcoBoost reliability history
Monitor
More capable for off-road and towing but more complex. Oil changes every 5,000 miles critical for both turbo longevity.
Check oil level and condition. Both turbos should spool cleanly.
Est. cost: Higher maintenance cost Source: Ford 2.7L EcoBoost service data

Off-Road & Electrical

Low Risk
Test all GOAT (Go Over Any Type of Terrain) modes on the center dial. Any missing mode indicator = investigate.
Cycle through all GOAT modes with vehicle stationary to verify each mode engages.
Est. cost: $0 Source: Ford Bronco GOAT system
Monitor
Broncos are frequently taken off-road. Inspect skid plates, frame rails, and differential housings for impact damage.
Inspect skid plates, CV boots, and underbody with a flashlight for rock strikes or impact damage.

Documentation

Monitor
2021 Broncos had multiple recalls. Request the VIN report and a recall printout before purchase.
Run VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Multiple open recalls on a 2021 = seller is pricing wrong.

NHTSA Recalls (verify completion via VIN)

21V-982
Forward-radar misalignment (shared with the 2021 Ranger)
The cruise-control radar module can be misaligned, so adaptive cruise may hold the wrong following distance and automatic emergency braking can be delayed or absent. Remedy: free dealer realignment.
21V-770
Passenger frontal airbag vents prematurely
During passenger airbag deployment a vent can open early, reducing the protection the bag provides in a crash. Remedy: free dealer repair.
22V-411
Passenger-side rear child safety lock (four-door only)
On four-door 2021-2022 trucks the passenger-side rear child safety lock may not hold, so the door can still be opened from inside. Remedy: free dealer inspection and repair.

Rearview image lingers after reverse — camera action 1 of 7

On trucks with the 8-inch SYNC system the rearview image can persist after reversing. Remedy: free dealer software update.

The rearview image can be lost entirely, removing the rear view when reversing. Campaign also covers several Lincoln and other Ford lines. Remedy: free dealer repair.

2.7L EcoBoost intake valve fracture — engine failure
Intake valves can break, causing engine failure and a loss of motive power while driving. Campaign spans 2021-2022 Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer and Lincoln Nautilus. On a 2.7L V6 truck (8th VIN digit P) this is the single most expensive thing to confirm closed. Remedy: free dealer engine inspection and repair.

25V-685
Engine block heater cracks — short circuit and fire risk
A cracked engine block heater can short circuit and create a fire risk. Broad multi-line Ford and Lincoln campaign. Only relevant if the truck was ordered with the block heater. Remedy: free dealer repair.
25V-721
Front seat pivot bolts loose
Front seat pivot bolts may be loose, so a seat may not restrain its occupant in a crash. Covers 2021-2023 Bronco. Remedy: free dealer inspection and torque or replacement.
25V-888
8-inch SYNC lingering image — camera action 6 of 7
A third 8-inch SYNC action on the lingering-image defect, opened late 2025. Remedy: free dealer software update.
26V-124
APIM overheats and blocks the rearview image — camera action 7 of 7
The infotainment module (APIM) can overheat and stop displaying the rearview image. Opened 2026, covering 2021-2026 Bronco and 2021-2024 Edge. The seventh and newest camera action: ask which of the seven a seller means when they say the camera recall was done. Remedy: free dealer repair.
26V-236
Transmission-to-transfer-case wear — power loss or rollaway
Wear at the transmission-to-transfer-case joint can cause a loss of motive power or let the truck roll away when parked. Opened 2026, covering 2021-2025 Bronco. Remedy: free dealer repair.
26V-299
Molded-in-color hardtop sections detach
MIC hardtop roof sections on 2021-2022 three-door and five-door trucks can detach and become a road hazard. This is the campaign behind the hardtop problem this page previously listed without a number. Opened 2026. Remedy: free dealer repair or replacement.
26V-468
Engine wiring damage — short circuit and fire risk
Damaged engine wiring can short, creating heat or sparks and a fire risk. Opened 2026, covering 2021-2026 Bronco and Bronco Raptor. Remedy: free dealer inspection and repair.

What the VIN tells you

8th VIN digit engine code: ‘H’ = 2.3L EcoBoost I4 (300 hp), ‘P’ = 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (330 hp). Both confirmed against NHTSA vPIC pattern data. On a first-year Bronco this digit decides which inspection you are doing. ‘H’ is the only engine offered with the 7-speed manual, so an ‘H’ car needs the transmission checked as carefully as the engine — work the shifter through every gate including the crawler, and confirm any manual-transmission campaign on the VIN is closed. ‘P’ is automatic-only, and early-build 2.7L cars carry an owner-tracked cluster of sudden valve-train engine failures that ran through 2022: ask the selling dealer to print the VIN service history and confirm whether any engine field service action was performed, and treat a replaced engine as a documentation question rather than a disqualifier. Beyond the engine, 2021 build quality is the real story on this truck (soft top, HVAC ducting, paint), so run the full VIN at nhtsa.gov and confirm every open recall is closed before you commit.
