Watchful

2nd-gen Ford Edge is a refined midsize crossover — the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 is the standout powertrain choice, with the 2.0L EcoBoost being adequate but carrying the same internal water pump issue as its sibling engines. PTU (Power Transfer Unit) fluid service on AWD models is the most commonly missed maintenance item and leads to premature failure. The Edge is a solid used buy with documented service history.

Top concern
AWD PTU failure / 2.0L water pump

Powertrain

High Attention
The 2.0L EcoBoost uses a timing-chain-driven internal water pump. Failure allows coolant to contaminate engine oil — catastrophic damage results.
Check for mayonnaise residue under oil cap and in coolant reservoir. Any contamination = walk away.
Est. cost: $1,800–$3,500 internal water pump Source: Ford 2.0 EcoBoost known pattern
High Attention
The Power Transfer Unit requires fluid changes every 30k–40k miles — almost universally skipped. Dry PTU = bearing whine and eventual failure.
Ask for PTU fluid service history. Listen for a 35–55 mph whine that changes with load or deceleration.
Est. cost: $150–$300 PTU service / $1,200–$2,200 PTU replacement Source: Ford AWD service requirement
Monitor
Transmission fluid should be clean reddish-amber. Dark or burnt fluid = overdue service.
Check fluid at dipstick (if accessible) or at fill plug.
Est. cost: $250–$400 fluid service Source: Ford service intervals

Electrical

Low Risk
SYNC 3 is one of Ford's better systems but has known CarPlay connectivity issues on early software.
Test wireless/wired CarPlay, backup camera, heated seat controls.
Est. cost: $0 software update Source: Ford campaigns

Suspension

Monitor
Upper strut mount noise over bumps is a common 60k+ wear item on Edge.
Drive over rough pavement slowly. Knock from front = strut mount.
Est. cost: $300–$600 per side Source: Common wear pattern

Body

Monitor
Panoramic roof drain tubes can clog, leading to water intrusion at A-pillar.
Check headliner at A-pillar for water stains or musty smell.
Est. cost: $100–$300 drain tube clean / $500–$1,500 headliner if saturated Source: Common complaint

Documentation

High Attention
PTU service documentation is the most important non-recall item on an AWD Edge. On the recall side this generation carries brake-hose (20V-469, 25V-544), shift-bushing (22V-413) and — on 2.0L cars — torque-converter (18V-390) campaigns.
Run VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask specifically for PTU service receipt.
Est. cost: Walk away from AWD without documented PTU service Source: NHTSA + Ford maintenance
