2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5
Standard Range / Long Range / AWD (E-GMP, 2022-present)
Watchful

The IONIQ 5 on the E-GMP platform is one of the best EVs launched since the Tesla Model 3 — 800V architecture enables ultra-fast charging (18 min to 80% at 350kW DCFC), distinctive retro styling, and a flat floor that maximizes interior space. Main buyer concerns: heat pump on cold-climate cars (standard on AWD, optional on RWD), charge port compatibility, and early production quality. Battery degradation is minimal on cars under 40k miles.

Battery & Charging

High Attention
IONIQ 5 battery should show minimal degradation under 40k miles. Compare current range to EPA rating (266 mi LR RWD, 266 mi LR AWD).
Charge to 80% and verify range estimate matches EPA. More than 10% loss = investigate.
Est. cost: $8,000–$16,000 HV battery if degraded Source: E-GMP battery data
Low Risk
IONIQ 5 uses 800V architecture with NACS/CCS port. Verify adapter situation for your charging network.
Verify charging port type and adapter availability for your preferred network.
Est. cost: $0–$400 adapters Source: EV charging network compatibility

Heat Pump

Monitor
Heat pump standard on AWD, optional on RWD. Cold climates without heat pump lose significant range.
Verify heat pump is installed (AWD standard, RWD: check order sheet).
Est. cost: N/A — verify before purchase Source: IONIQ 5 spec sheet

Software & OTA

Monitor
IONIQ 5 receives regular OTA updates. Verify the car is running current software — outdated versions may have charging bugs.
Check software version in vehicle settings.
Est. cost: $0 OTA update Source: Hyundai EV campaigns

Body Quality

Monitor
Early 2022 production IONIQ 5s had panel gap inconsistencies — mostly cosmetic.
Inspect all body panel gaps, especially hood and rear hatch.
Est. cost: Cosmetic / $0–$500 adjustment Source: Consumer reports

Documentation

High Attention
Four recalls possible. Battery health is the primary purchase variable.
Charge to 80% and check range. Run nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Est. cost: Walk away from >15% battery degradation without price adjustment Source: NHTSA

What the VIN tells you

IONIQ 5 (E-GMP) is electric-only, so the 8th VIN digit encodes the motor/battery configuration rather than a combustion engine, reported as B for single-motor RWD and C for dual-motor AWD (320 hp, 77.4 kWh). Treat the B/C split as confirm-at-vpic (single-source) and verify motor count plus heat-pump fitment from the build sheet, since the heat pump is standard on AWD but optional on RWD. 10th digit N = 2022 (P = 2023).
