2020 Hyundai Sonata
SE / SEL / SEL Plus / Limited / Hybrid (8th gen DN8, 2020–present)
Low Risk

The 8th-gen Sonata is a complete redesign — flush door handles, distinctive styling, and a strong powertrain lineup. No Theta II concerns on this generation. The 2.5L naturally-aspirated is the reliable workhorse; the 1.6T is fun with no significant issues. Main buyer checks: smooth 8-speed automatic shifts on the 1.6T and confirming no open recalls. The 290-hp 2.5T N Line (wet 8-speed DCT) is a 2021-and-later addition, not available for 2020.

What the VIN tells you

8th VIN digit = engine code: 'A' = 2.5L Smartstream MPI I4 (191 hp, the naturally-aspirated workhorse); '2' = 1.6L turbo GDI I4 (180 hp); 'J' = 2.0L Smartstream GDI Hybrid. For 2020 all three use torque-converter automatics — the 2.5L and 1.6T get an in-house 8-speed, the Hybrid a 6-speed — so there is no dual-clutch to inspect this year. The 290-hp 2.5T N Line, which pairs a wet 8-speed DCT with a sport tune, did not arrive until MY2021; a genuine 2020 will never decode to it. Confirm the engine family with a full VIN decode at autovetting.com/decode and check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls before purchase.
