2021 Kia Seltos
LX / S / EX / SX / SX Turbo (1st gen SP2n, 2021–present)
Low Risk

The Seltos is Kia's subcompact crossover — more premium feeling than Venue, available 1.6T turbo, and excellent safety ratings. No Theta II concerns on either engine. The 1.6T with DCT can experience shudder at low speeds — same pattern as Kona. The 2.0L with IVT is simpler and more reliable for everyday use. Very clean platform with minimal failure history.

What the VIN tells you

The 2021 Seltos (1st-gen SP2) comes with two very different powertrains, and the 8th VIN digit separates them: 'A' = the 2.0L MPI Nu four-cylinder (146 hp), naturally aspirated and paired with Kia's IVT (a chain-driven CVT); '2' = the 1.6L turbo Gamma four-cylinder (175 hp) paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT). The inspection paths diverge: the 2.0L/IVT is the simpler, lower-risk choice (verify IVT fluid service, no turbo concerns), while the 1.6T/DCT can shudder at 15-25 mph — request the dealer DCT software-update history and feel for clutch shudder in slow traffic (a worn DCT clutch pack is a $2,000+ repair). The turbo SX trim adds AWD as standard; AWD is optional on lower trims. Neither engine is a Theta II unit, so the Hyundai-Kia engine-fire campaigns do not apply here. Decode the full VIN at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov to confirm engine family, and run it at nhtsa.gov for open recalls before purchase.
