What the VIN tells you

The 4th-gen Sorento (MQ4) spreads across three powertrains and the 8th VIN digit is the clean fork: C = the 2.5L naturally aspirated Smartstream four (191 hp, 8-speed automatic), F = the 2.5T turbocharged four (281 hp) mated to the 8-speed wet dual-clutch (DCT), and G = the 1.6T hybrid (227 hp combined). It is the F turbo/DCT car — not the base engine — that exhibits the low-speed dual-clutch shudder, so if the 8th digit is F, test 15–25 mph light-throttle behavior closely and confirm any DCT software update was applied. None of these engines carries Theta II KSDS exposure. (The plug-in PHEV is a separate Korea-built electrified variant sharing the 1.6T; verify it by full VIN.) Confirm the engine at autovetting.com/decode or vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov, and run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before purchase.
