The 5th-gen Sportage is a major improvement over the 4th gen — substantially larger interior, available hybrid and PHEV powertrains, and Kia Connect suite. No Theta II exposure. The base 2.5L is competent; the 1.6T Hybrid is the sweet spot for fuel economy. Main buyer check on this young platform: confirm no open NHTSA recalls and test the DCT or CVT for smooth operation.

What the VIN tells you

The 5th-gen (NQ5) Sportage splits across three very different powertrains and the inspection changes completely depending on which you are looking at: the 2.5L MPI gas four (Smartstream G4KN, 187 hp), the 1.6T hybrid (G4FT turbo + motor, 227 hp combined), and the 1.6T plug-in hybrid (261 hp combined, ~34 mi EV). Kia encodes engine in the 8th VIN digit (F = 2.5L gas, G = 1.6T hybrid, H = 1.6T PHEV per Kia’s scheme), but always confirm the exact powertrain by decoding the full VIN at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov before buying — a hybrid or PHEV adds high-voltage battery, inverter, and (PHEV) charging-system checks that do not apply to the gas car, and the gas 2.5L is NOT a Theta II engine so it carries no KSDS rod-bearing exposure. The 10th digit gives model year (P = 2023).
