Low Risk

The KF CX-5 (2017+) is the definitive mainstream compact SUV — best-in-class interior quality, engaging chassis, and exceptional reliability. The 2.5L naturally-aspirated is the sole engine for 2017 (the 2.5T turbo and Signature trim did not arrive until 2019). Direct injection does not carbon-foul at the same rate as German competitors due to Mazda's dual-port/direct injection approach. Outstanding used value.

What the VIN tells you

For 2017 there is only one engine to decode — the 2.5L SkyActiv-G PY-VPS naturally-aspirated four (187 hp). The 2.5T SkyActiv-T turbo and the Signature trim did not arrive until the 2019 model year, so any 2017 KF CX-5 advertised as a 'turbo' or 'Signature' is mislabeled. Because the powertrain is uniform across 2017 trims, the 8th VIN digit is not an engine differentiator here; the useful VIN checks are the 10th digit (model year — code H confirms 2017, so you are not looking at a later turbo car) and a full decode at nhtsa.gov to confirm the Denso fuel-pump recall (21V-875, 2018-2019 cars only) is out of range and any AWD or other campaigns are closed.
