The 1st-gen CX-50 offers two 2.5L SKYACTIV-G fours and the 8th VIN digit tells them apart: M = the naturally-aspirated 2.5 (PY-VPS, 187 hp) and Y = the turbocharged 2.5T (PY-VPTS, 256 hp on 93 octane / 227 hp on 87). They share a block but differ in pistons, compression, exhaust, and the turbo’s forged rods, so the turbo wants strict premium-fuel and oil-interval discipline while the NA car is the simpler ownership case. Confirm engine and AWD by decoding the full VIN at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov (10th digit P = 2023) and verify no open recalls at nhtsa.gov — every U.S. CX-50 is AWD, so budget the i-Activ rear-coupling fluid service regardless of engine.
