2018 Nissan Frontier
S / SV / Desert Runner / Pro-4X (D40, 2005-2021)
Watchful

The D40 Frontier ran largely unchanged from 2005–2021 — which makes parts cheap and reliability a known quantity. The 4.0L VQ40DE V6 is a proven workhorse. Main buyer concern: the 4.0L V6 radiator coolant cross-contaminating the automatic transmission (same family issue as Pathfinder). Also inspect for frame rust and catalytic converter theft on street-parked trucks.

Radiator/trans coolant cross-contamination (V6 auto) / catalytic converter theft

Powertrain

Critical
The radiator on VQ40 Frontiers with automatic transmission can leak coolant into the transmission fluid — same class of failure as the Pathfinder CVT contamination. Pink or milky transmission fluid = walk away.
Check transmission fluid color before driving — should be red, never pink or milky.
Est. cost: $800–$1,500 radiator + $2,500–$4,000 transmission flush or rebuild Source: Nissan radiator/trans contamination pattern
Low Risk
Valve cover gaskets seep oil past 100k miles on VQ40.
Inspect valve cover edges with engine warm.
Est. cost: $300–$600 gaskets Source: VQ40 pattern

Frame & Undercarriage

High Attention
D40 Frontier frames rust in Northeast/Midwest states. Through-rust on the frame is structural.
Inspect frame with flashlight — check cab corners, crossmembers, and rear section.
Est. cost: Walk away from through-rust on structural sections Source: Truck inspection standard
Monitor
Frontier is a high-theft target for catalytic converter theft due to its height and accessible exhaust.
Listen for loud exhaust note — missing cats are unmistakable. Inspect exhaust flanges for cut or clamp marks.
Est. cost: $800–$2,000 catalytic converter replacement Source: High theft vehicle list

Electrical

Low Risk
D40 Frontier uses an older NissanConnect that lacks wireless CarPlay. Functions are basic but reliable.
Verify backup camera (if equipped) and basic audio functions.
Est. cost: $0–$300 aftermarket upgrade Source: Consumer acceptance

Documentation

Critical
Transmission contamination check is non-negotiable. Run nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Inspect fluid before driving.
Est. cost: Walk away from contaminated fluid Source: NHTSA

Ignition Switch — engine can shut off while driving (mechanical-key trucks)
Covers 2017-2018 Frontier built with a mechanical (physical) key ignition, alongside 2017 Sentra, Versa Note/Sedan, the NV van family and the Chevrolet City Express. Weight on the key ring, rough roads or another jarring event can rotate the ignition switch out of RUN into ACC, turning the engine off in motion — loss of power assist and, in a crash, possible airbag non-deployment. Remedy inspects the switch's production information and replaces the switch if it is in the affected range (began October 2018). Push-button-start trucks are not affected. A heavy keychain on the test drive is the classic trigger — run the VIN and confirm this one is closed.

Back-Up Camera Display Settings (FMVSS 111)
Part of the ~1.2M-unit September 2019 campaign across most 2018-2019 Nissan and Infiniti models: the back-up camera display can be adjusted so the rear-view image no longer appears, and the system keeps that setting the next time reverse is selected — a Federal rear-visibility compliance failure. Remedy is a free settings-software update (began November 2019). Shift into reverse during the test drive and confirm the camera image actually appears.
