Monitor

The 2nd-gen LEAF is a practical and affordable EV for city and suburban use. The main buyer concern is battery degradation: the LEAF uses passive thermal management (no active liquid cooling) which accelerates capacity loss in hot climates or with frequent DC fast charging. CHAdeMO rapid charging is available but the standard is being phased out. Check battery health carefully — a used LEAF in Phoenix is very different from one in Seattle.

Battery Health — Critical Check

High Risk if lost bars
LEAF shows capacity via 12 battery bars in the instrument cluster. Each lost bar = about 6.25% capacity lost. A 2019 LEAF that has lost 2+ bars has significant degradation.
Check instrument cluster — all 12 bars should be present on a well-maintained sub-50k example. Count them explicitly.
Est. cost: $5,000–$8,000 battery pack replacement if severely degraded Source: Nissan LEAF battery bar system
High Risk in hot climates
LEAF batteries degrade faster in hot climates (Arizona, Texas, Florida, California) and with frequent DC fast charging.
Request Carfax for registration state history. Southern-state or high-DCFC-use cars may show 3–4 lost bars by 60k miles.

Charging

Low Risk
CHAdeMO DC fast charging is increasingly rare. Inspect port for corrosion.
Inspect CHAdeMO and J1772 ports for corrosion or damage.

Drivetrain

Low Risk
Motor and inverter are very reliable. No widespread failure modes.
Test smooth acceleration and regenerative braking. No unusual sounds.

Documentation

High Risk without
For the LEAF specifically, where it lived and how it was charged matters more than mileage.
Request Carfax state history and ask about DCFC charging frequency.
