S / SV / SL / Rock Creek / Platinum (5th gen R53, 2022–present)
Low Risk
The 5th-gen Pathfinder is a complete redesign that addressed the CVT reliability concerns of the 4th gen — the R53 replaces the CVT with a 9-speed automatic. Outstanding improvement. The 3.5L VQ35DD is proven. Available 6- and 7-seat configurations. Main checks: 9-speed automatic fluid service, AWD coupling fluid, and early-production recall status. One of the most improved SUVs in its segment.

What the VIN tells you
Every 2022 Pathfinder uses the same engine — the 3.5L VQ35DD V6 (284 hp) — so there is no engine-family fork to decode. Note a Nissan VIN quirk: the engine code is carried in the 4th VIN digit (a 'D' denotes the VQ35DD), not the 8th digit most makes use for engine. The decode that actually matters on this vehicle is the model year in the 10th digit: 'N' = 2022, the first year of the 5th-gen R53, which replaced the 4th-gen R52's troublesome CVT with a 9-speed conventional automatic. Confirming an R53 (2022 or later) is the single most important thing a buyer can verify here — it is the difference between the CVT generation and the far more durable 9AT. Verify the full spec at autovetting.com/decode or vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov, and run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before purchase.
