Low Risk

The 6th-gen CR-V is a complete redesign — more interior space, available hybrid on all trims, and Honda Sensing 2.0 standard. The 1.5T oil dilution issue is substantially reduced over the 5th gen. The Hybrid is the strongest powertrain choice. No established failure modes on this very young platform. Best-in-class cargo space and practicality.

What the VIN tells you

The 6th-gen CR-V (RS/RW, 2023+) comes in exactly two powertrains: the 1.5T VTEC Turbo four (190 hp, CVT) on LX, EX and EX-L, and the 2.0L two-motor hybrid (204 hp combined) on Sport and Sport Touring. Honda encodes powertrain across the VDS (VIN positions 4–8) rather than in a single clean 8th-digit letter like Toyota or Mazda, so confirm gas-vs-hybrid by running the VIN through vPIC at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov and checking for the hybrid badge. The hybrid uses an e-CVT/two-motor unit and adds HV-battery and inverter checks the 1.5T does not have; the 1.5T uses a conventional CVT that wants periodic fluid service. Position 10 encodes model year: P = 2023, R = 2024.
