2012 Honda Ridgeline
RT / RTS / RTL / Sport (1st gen, 2009-2014)
Low Risk

The 1st-gen Ridgeline is the sleeper pick of midsize trucks — unibody, AWD, Honda V6, and the unique in-bed trunk. Tow rating is only 5,000 lbs, but reliability matches or beats the Tacoma at a lower price. Main concerns: motor mounts, paint, and 2007-2009 transmission torque converter issues (less concerning on the 2012 refresh).

Powertrain

High Attention
The Ridgeline's active hydraulic motor mounts have a high failure rate, especially the rear mount. Symptom: vibration at idle, clunk on shifts, harsh acceleration.
At idle in Drive (foot on brake), feel the steering wheel and shifter for excessive vibration. Listen for a clunk going from Reverse to Drive. Pop the hood and inspect mounts for oily leaks (hydraulic fluid).
Est. cost: $400-$700 per mount at independent shop (3 mounts total) Source: Honda TSB 11-061 + community consensus
Monitor
The J35 V6 with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) can develop oil consumption and spark plug fouling on the deactivated cylinders. Aftermarket "VCM Muzzler" device permanently disables the system.
Check oil level and consumption rate. Pull plugs (#1, #4, #6) to check for fouling. Ask if a VCM Muzzler is installed — that's a positive sign of awareness.
Est. cost: $30 VCM Muzzler / $500-$1,500 spark plug + cleaning service if fouled Source: Honda Pilot/Ridgeline community
Low Risk
Early Ridgelines (2006-2007) had torque converter judder issues — largely resolved by the 2009 refresh. 2009+ trucks rarely have transmission problems if fluid is changed.
Verify Honda ATF DW-1 fluid change at 60k intervals. Test all shifts. Pay attention to converter lockup around 45-55 mph — any shudder = converter starting to go.
Est. cost: $180 fluid service / $3,500+ rebuild if neglected Source: Honda service intervals

Suspension & AWD

Monitor
The VTM-4 rear differential uses a specific Honda fluid (DPSF). Owners often skip the change, causing rear-end clunk and eventual failure.
Ask when the rear diff fluid was last changed (Honda says 30k, owners do every 15-20k). Drive in tight turns at low speed — clunk or judder = neglect.
Est. cost: $100 fluid service / $2,500+ diff rebuild if failed Source: Honda service docs
Low Risk
At 100k+ miles, front compliance bushings start to develop play.
Drive over speed bumps and listen for clunks from the front. Visually inspect bushings for cracking.
Est. cost: $400-$700 per side Source: Standard wear pattern

Body, Bed & Interior

Low Risk
Honda paint of this era is thin — minor chips and peeling are common, especially on hood and roof.
Inspect hood, roof, and bumper edges. Stone chips are normal; major peeling = sun damage.
Est. cost: $500-$2,500 spot repaint Source: Honda paint era
Low Risk
The unique in-bed trunk uses a rubber seal that can crack and leak water into the trunk.
Open the in-bed trunk and inspect the seal. Pour a cup of water on the seal area and verify no leakage into the trunk.
Est. cost: $30-$80 replacement seal Source: Ridgeline-specific
Low Risk
The Ridgeline has a unique tailgate that opens both down (like a normal truck) and sideways. Both hinges and latches need to work.
Open the tailgate both ways. Verify the side-hinge mechanism works smoothly.
Est. cost: $100-$300 hinge replacement Source: Ridgeline-specific

Electrical

Low Risk
Standard maintenance — battery typically lasts 4-5 years. Charging system is robust.
Check battery date sticker — replace if older than 4 years. Verify cold cranking is strong.
Est. cost: $150-$250 battery Source: Standard maintenance

NHTSA Recalls (verify completion via VIN)

22V-430
Rear Frame Corrosion — Fuel Tank Detachment (salt states)
THE BIG ONE on this truck. 2006-2014 Ridgelines ever registered in 22 salt-belt states plus DC: road salt corrodes the frame surface where the fuel tank mounting bands attach, and the tank can detach and leak. Honda repairs the rear frame free, and where corrosion is severe has offered to repurchase the vehicle. Verify by VIN before buying any Northeast or Midwest truck.
19V-501
Takata Passenger Inflator (replacement parts)
2006-2014 Ridgeline: passenger inflators installed as an earlier recall remedy or as a service part can themselves explode. A previously "completed" Takata repair does not close this one.
19V-500
Takata Driver Inflator (replacement parts)
2007-2014 Ridgeline: driver inflators installed as a remedy or service part may rupture. Same trap as 19V-501 — verify by VIN, not by paperwork.
19V-182
Takata Driver Inflator (manufacturing error)
2006-2014 Ridgeline: replacement driver inflators built with a manufacturing defect. Honda replaces them with an alternate inflator.
18V-662
Takata Passenger Inflator (2011-2013, zone-scoped)
Covers 2011-2013 Ridgelines registered in the listed hot-humid and moderate zone states. Scope follows registration history, not just build date.
18V-268
Passenger Airbag Installed Incorrectly
2012 Ridgeline among many Honda models: a front passenger airbag may have been installed wrong during a previous replacement, so it can deploy improperly.
18V-041
Takata Passenger Inflator (Zone A/B/C)
2011-2013 Ridgeline in Zone A states, 2010 in Zone B, 2009 in Zone C. Ask where the truck has lived, then verify by VIN.
17V-029
Takata Passenger Inflator (2006-2012, Zone A/B)
2006-2012 Ridgeline in Zone A states; 2006-2009 Ridgeline in Zone B. Passenger inflator rupture risk.
16V-061
Takata Driver Inflator (dual-stage, moisture)
2007-2014 Ridgeline: dual-stage driver frontal inflator susceptible to moisture intrusion and rupture. Verify replacement completed by VIN.
12V-432
Passenger Airbag Status Indicator
Tiny campaign — only 2012 Ridgelines built April 18, 2012. Incorrect passenger-airbag-off indicator installed (FMVSS 208).
12V-025
Spare Tire / Tire Placard Mismatch
2011-2012 Ridgelines built Aug 25 through Nov 29, 2011: the spare tire may not match the tire information placard (FMVSS 110).
