Sport / RTL / RTL-E / Black Edition / RTL-E (2nd gen YK2, 2017–2023)
Low Risk

The 2nd-gen Ridgeline is a refined unibody truck — better for daily commuting and lighter hauling than ladder-frame pickups. The 3.5L V6 is highly reliable (same engine family as Odyssey/Pilot). Main checks are the i-VTM4 AWD rear differential fluid (critical service), any VCM (cylinder deactivation) motor mount wear on high-mileage units, and bed integrity. Outstanding used truck choice for buyers who do not need serious towing or off-road capability.

Powertrain

Monitor
VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) activates in fuel-saving 3-cylinder mode, causing vibration that wears motor mounts prematurely. Replacement mounts or VCM disabler ($60) prevent recurrence.
At warm idle in Drive, feel for vibration through steering wheel and shifter. Any shudder = motor mounts likely worn.
Est. cost: $200–$600 motor mounts; $60 VCM Muzzler (preventive) Source: Honda VCM mount pattern
Low Risk
Honda 9AT is well-sorted. No widespread issues. Change fluid every 30k for towing applications.
Test all gears including tow mode. Smooth shifts expected.
Est. cost: $150–$250 fluid service Source: Honda 9AT reliability

i-VTM4 AWD

High Risk without
The i-VTM4 rear diff requires DPS-F fluid every 15k–30k miles. Neglected fluid leads to chatter and bearing failure. Check service records specifically for this item.
Request differential fluid service records. Tight turn test: no vibration or binding expected.
Est. cost: $150–$300 diff fluid service; $1,500–$3,000 diff repair if neglected Source: Honda i-VTM4 service requirement

Bed & Frunk

Low Risk
Test the lockable in-bed storage trunk and the tailgate side-swing/drop-down functions.
Test all tailgate modes and confirm in-bed trunk seal is intact and dry.
Est. cost: $0–$200 Source: Honda Ridgeline standard

Documentation

High Risk without
Two maintenance items above standard: diff fluid at 15–30k, and VCM motor mount status.
Request diff service records. Ask about VCM disabler install.

What the VIN tells you

Unlike most trucks in its class, the 2nd-generation Ridgeline (2017–2023) offers only one engine — the 3.5L J35Y6 i-VTEC V6 (280 hp) with a 9-speed automatic — so there is no engine family to decode. Two facts matter more for a 2021 specifically. First, i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel drive became standard on every trim for 2021 (the front-drive base configuration sold in 2020 was dropped), so a genuine 2021 should be AWD — verify the drivetrain with a full VIN decode at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov and treat any “FWD 2021 Ridgeline” listing as a red flag for a mistitled vehicle. Second, position 10 of the VIN encodes the model year (M = 2021); confirm it matches the title, then run the full VIN at nhtsa.gov to verify the open-recall history is closed before purchase. Because all 2021 Ridgelines share the same V6, the inspection priorities are identical regardless of trim: VCM motor-mount vibration at warm idle and i-VTM4 rear-differential fluid-service history.
