2018 Honda Fit
LX / Sport / EX / EX-L / Touring (GK, 3rd gen, US 2015-2020)
Low Risk

The GK Fit is one of the most practical subcompact cars ever made — the Magic Seat system creates more usable space configurations than any car in its class. The 1.5L L15B1 naturally-aspirated engine is reliable and fuel-efficient. CVT fluid service every 30k miles. Discontinued after 2020 in North America, making used supply finite — prices hold well.

Powertrain

High Attention
CVT requires HCF-2 fluid every 30k miles. Neglected fluid leads to shudder and failure.
Request CVT fluid service history.
Est. cost: $200–$400 service / $3,500–$5,000 CVT Source: Honda CVT service standard
Low Risk
Naturally-aspirated and exceptionally reliable.
Standard check.
Est. cost: Maintenance only Source: Honda L15 track record

Safety Recalls

Monitor
Honda's Fit Takata scope is 2009-2014 — the GE-generation car. No GK Fit build date received a recalled inflator, so "some builds" is not a real distinction here. What the 2018 car does have is the Denso fuel pump campaign, which is the one to check.
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before any test drive. Any open campaign = do not purchase until a dealer has closed it; the work is free and completion is logged against the VIN.
Est. cost: Free under recall Source: Honda Takata affected-model list (hondanews.com fact sheet), verified 2026-08-09

Suspension

Low Risk
Standard wear at 80k+ miles.
Bounce test.
Est. cost: $300–$600 per strut Source: Common wear

Body

Monitor
GK Fit develops rocker panel rust on salt-belt cars.
Inspect rockers with flashlight.
Est. cost: $200–$1,200 depending on severity Source: Honda compact rust pattern

Documentation

Critical
CVT fluid history is the document that decides this purchase. Honda calls for fluid service around every 30,000 miles and a GK Fit with no receipts has almost certainly never had it done.
Request CVT fluid receipts, then run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. No CVT records = walk away.
Est. cost: $120-$180 fluid service / $3,500-$5,000 CVT replacement if neglected Source: Honda CVT service schedule

Pump impeller may deform and fail — stall risk. Covers 2018–2019 Fit; free replacement, verify by VIN.

What the VIN tells you

Engine-code correction — the US-market 2018 Fit (GK gen) uses the naturally-aspirated 1.5L L15B1 (130hp DOHC i-VTEC), not the turbocharged L15B7; the L15B7 is the Civic/CR-V 1.5T and only appears in a Fit as an aftermarket swap. With a single engine there is nothing to disambiguate by VIN — Honda carries the model/engine in the 6th VIN character and the 8th digit encodes grade/body within the line, not the powertrain. The variable worth confirming is the transmission: a 6-speed manual was offered on lower trims while EX/EX-L/Touring (and most builds) are CVT — verify the HCF-2 CVT-fluid service history.
