2018 Honda HR-V
LX / Sport / EX / EX-L / Touring (RU, 1st gen, 2016-2022)
Low Risk

The RU HR-V is one of the most practical subcompact SUVs available — the Magic Seat rear-seat system creates genuinely useful cargo configurations. The 1.8L L15B is a naturally-aspirated Honda engine with an outstanding reliability record. CVT is the standard; the 6-speed manual is a rarer and fun option. Limited power is the main tradeoff for fuel efficiency and low ownership cost.

Top concern
CVT fluid history / limited power / fuel pump campaign

Powertrain

High Attention
Honda CVT requires HCF-2 fluid every 30k miles. Neglected fluid leads to shudder and failure.
Ask for CVT fluid service history.
Est. cost: $200–$400 fluid service / $3,500–$5,000 CVT replacement Source: Honda CVT service standard
Low Risk
The L15B naturally-aspirated engine is one of Honda's most reliable small engines.
Standard pre-purchase check.
Est. cost: Maintenance only Source: Honda L15B track record

AWD

Monitor
Rear differential requires DPS-F fluid service every 30k miles on AWD cars.
Test tight parking lot turns for any vibration.
Est. cost: $150–$300 service Source: Honda AWD standard

Electrical

Monitor
The HR-V does not appear on Honda's Takata affected-model list in any model year — the US car did not go on sale until well after the recalled inflators stopped being fitted. The campaign that does matter on a 2018 is the Denso fuel pump.
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before purchase. Any open campaign = do not purchase until a dealer has closed it; the work is free and completion is logged against the VIN.
Est. cost: Free under recall Source: Honda Takata affected-model list (hondanews.com fact sheet), verified 2026-08-09

Suspension

Low Risk
Standard wear at 80k+ miles.
Bounce test at each corner.
Est. cost: $400–$700 per strut Source: Common wear

Documentation

Critical
CVT fluid history is the document that decides this purchase. The HR-V CVT is durable when serviced and expensive when it is not, and a car with no receipts has almost certainly never had the fluid changed.
Request the CVT fluid service record, then run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. No CVT records = walk away.
Est. cost: $120-$180 fluid service / $3,500-$5,000 CVT replacement if neglected Source: Honda CVT service schedule

NHTSA Recalls (verify completion via VIN)

Multiple
Open recalls — VIN check
Campaigns vary by build date. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and require every open recall closed before purchase.
23V-858
Denso Fuel Pump Impeller
Pump impeller may deform and fail — stall risk. Covers 2018–2020 HR-V; free replacement, verify by VIN.

What the VIN tells you

One engine across every 2018 HR-V: the 1.8L SOHC i-VTEC R18Z9 four (141 hp) — not the L15B, which is Honda’s 1.5L turbo family and never went in the RU HR-V (earlier checklist text calling it ‘L15B’ was an engine-code error, corrected here). With a single engine, Honda’s 8th VIN digit does not fork the powertrain — it encodes grade/restraint, and the mechanicals are identical from LX to Touring. The real decode is the transmission: a CVT is standard (verify Honda HCF-2 fluid history — the top powertrain watch item), while a genuine 6-speed manual was offered only on lower FWD trims and is rare enough to confirm on the build. AWD adds a Real Time rear differential that needs its own fluid service. Decode the full VIN at autovetting.com/decode and run the VIN for open recalls — note the HR-V is not on Honda's Takata affected-model list, so the campaign to look for is the Denso fuel pump.
