2008 Toyota 4Runner
SR5 / Sport / Limited / Trail, V6 4.0L (N210, 4th gen, 2003-2009)
Low Risk

The 4th-gen 4Runner (2003-2009) sits on the same legendary platform as the Lexus GX 470 and the Prado. Bulletproof drivetrains in both V6 and V8 trims. The four areas that matter: frame rust (Northeast trucks), the X-REAS suspension on Sport models (very expensive when it leaks), KDSS on Trail Editions, and the cracking dashboard.

Frame & Underbody

High Attention
Like the Tacoma, 4th-gen 4Runners in salt-belt states can have frame corrosion. The 2003-2009 generation was NOT covered by Toyota's buyback program — owners are on their own.
Inspect the rear frame rails, leaf hangers (if equipped), and cross-members. Scale and surface rust = normal. Flaking, perforation, or "swiss cheese" pattern = walk away. Use a small hammer or screwdriver to test.
Est. cost: $0 to walk / $4,000+ frame work / write-off Source: NHTSA frame complaints
Monitor
KDSS is Toyota's hydraulically-linked sway bar — exceptional off-road but expensive when it leaks. Failed KDSS = stiff, unbalanced ride.
Inspect KDSS accumulator and lines under the truck for hydraulic fluid leaks. Drive on uneven ground — body should remain composed. Lifted KDSS trucks need KDSS-specific lift kits.
Est. cost: $1,500-$3,000 if KDSS rebuild needed Source: Trail Edition specific
High Attention
X-REAS is the cross-linked hydraulic shock system on Sport trims. When it fails (and it eventually does), replacement is over $2,000 in OEM parts. Most owners convert to conventional shocks.
Look under the truck for hydraulic shock leaks at the corners and at the center accumulator. If the seller has already converted to standard shocks (Bilstein or KYB), that's actually a plus.
Est. cost: $2,200+ OEM X-REAS / $600-$1,000 conversion to conventional Source: Sport Edition specific

Powertrain

No Known Issues
The 1GR-FE V6 has the same bulletproof reputation in the 4Runner as in the Tacoma. 300,000+ miles is normal with basic maintenance.
Verify oil change history. Listen for clean idle and acceleration. Pull dipstick — golden to brown oil.
Est. cost: $0 if maintained Source: Toyota engine reliability data
Monitor
V8 4Runners (2005-2009) can throw secondary air injection codes (P2440-P2443), often around 100k miles. The system itself is rarely fully broken — usually a faulty switching valve or pump.
Scan for any stored codes. Listen for the secondary air pump at cold start (should run for ~30 seconds). Any check engine light = ask which code.
Est. cost: $400-$900 valve / $1,500+ pump replacement Source: Toyota TSB EG062-08
Low Risk
The 5-speed automatic is reliable when fluid is maintained. Toyota called it "lifetime fill" — community consensus is change at 60k.
Verify fluid was changed. Test all shift points. Smooth 1-2-3 upshifts, firm but smooth.
Est. cost: $250 fluid service Source: Toyota service docs

Interior & Electrical

Monitor
The 4th-gen 4Runner dashboard cracks badly in sun-belt states (Arizona, Texas, Florida). A documented issue Toyota did not address. Replacement is expensive.
Inspect the dashboard for cracks, especially on the passenger side and at corners. Surface cracks are cosmetic but indicate AZ/TX truck. A dash cover may hide damage — lift it.
Est. cost: $1,000+ dash replacement / $50-$150 dash cover Source: AZ/TX-specific wear pattern
Low Risk
The rear hatch power window and wiper motors are known wear items. Some owners report sticky window operation.
Test rear hatch window up and down 3 times. Test rear wiper. Listen for grinding from the hatch.
Est. cost: $200-$400 motor replacement Source: Standard wear
Low Risk
The optional third-row seat folds flat — verify it still folds, latches, and the seat-belt buckles work.
Fold the third row up and down. Test all latches and seat belts. Stuck mechanisms can be lubricated.
Est. cost: $50-$200 latch repair Source: Standard wear

11V-113
Accelerator Pedal / Floor Mat Entrapment
2003-2009 4Runner (also 2008-2011 Lexus LX 570 and 2006-2010 RAV4): the accelerator pedal can be trapped wide open by an unsecured or incompatible driver floor mat. Toyota campaign 90L — remedy reshapes or replaces the pedal and replaces any Toyota all-weather mat. This is the real floor-mat campaign on this truck; confirm it was closed and that the mat in the footwell is the correct secured one.
16V-396
Accessory Seat Heaters — Fire Risk (SET)
2005-2011 4Runner among a long Southeast Toyota list fitted with aftermarket seat heaters using a copper-strand element: compressing the cushion can damage the wiring and short it. Dealers disconnect the heaters and refund the accessory. SET16B — check whether the seats have dealer-added heat.
14V-743
Accessory Seat Heaters — Earlier Wave (SET)
2007-2011 4Runner and a long SET list: the earlier version of the same seat-heater wiring defect, same disconnect-and-refund remedy. If a truck shows one of these two campaigns open, the heated seats may simply have been switched off rather than repaired.
10V-035
Load-Capacity Labels (Gulf States Toyota)
2005-2010 Gulf States Toyota vehicles sold Sept 2005 - June 2008 without the required load-carrying-capacity modification labels (FMVSS 110). Label-and-manual fix; matters only if you plan to load the truck to its rating.
