2018 Toyota Land Cruiser
Base (J200, 2008–2021)
Low Risk

The J200 Land Cruiser is one of the most durable vehicles ever made — legendary off-road capability, ultra-reliable drivetrain, and Toyota build quality. They commonly reach 300k–400k miles with routine maintenance. The 5.7L 3UR-FE is the same engine as the Sequoia. The Land Cruiser is not on Toyota's Takata affected-model list, but a VIN recall check is still mandatory. Frame rust in northern states is worth checking. High purchase price reflects the high residual value.

Recall

Monitor
The Land Cruiser does not appear on Toyota's Takata affected-model list. Its Lexus cousin the GX460 does — which is probably where the claim came from — but the GX is a different platform (150-series) with different restraint hardware, and one does not imply the other. Run the VIN anyway: the J200 has real campaigns.
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you go and see the car. Any campaign that comes back open = do not purchase until the dealer has closed it. Recall work is always free, and completion is logged against the VIN, so a seller's word is not evidence.

Powertrain

Low Risk
One of the most reliable V8 engines Toyota has made. Change oil every 5,000 miles. Timing chain robust. Check valve cover seeps at high mileage.
Cold-start check. Oil level and color. Valve cover area for seeps.

Low Risk
Same transmission as Sequoia and Tundra. Very durable. Change WS fluid every 60k.
Test all gears including tow mode. Smooth shifts expected.

Underbody & Frame

High Risk (rust belt)
Land Cruiser frames rust in salt states. Inspect from below with flashlight.
Full underbody inspection. Southern-state car is strongly preferred.

Monitor
