What the VIN tells you

Single hybrid powertrain across all trims: the 3.5L 2GR-FXS V6 (the hybrid-specific D-4S variant — the gas Highlander uses the 2GR-FKS) with Toyota eCVT and standard AWD-e, 306 hp combined. With only one drivetrain, the 8th VIN digit does not disambiguate an engine; the decode that matters is confirming this is the hybrid (2GR-FXS), not a gas XU50 badged up — verify the HV battery pack and Hybrid model code, then test the battery via mixed-driving fuel economy.
