2018 Toyota 4Runner
SR5 / TRD Off-Road / Limited / TRD Pro / Venture (N280, 5th gen, 2010-2024)
Low Risk

The 5th-gen 4Runner has run nearly unchanged since 2010 — which means a proven, documented reliability record and broad aftermarket support. The 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 is virtually bulletproof past 300k miles. The off-road capability (especially TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road) is genuine. Fuel economy is poor (17 city, 19 hwy). Rust on salt-belt trucks and catalytic converter theft are the primary concerns.

What the VIN tells you

Single engine — the US 5th-gen (N280) 4Runner offered only the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 (270hp) with a 5-speed automatic, so nothing on the powertrain changes by VIN. Toyota encodes the engine in the 5th VIN character (U = 1GR-FE), not the 8th; the 8th digit identifies the model line. The spec that actually varies is the drivetrain — SR5 and TRD Off-Road run part-time 4WD, the Limited runs full-time 4WD with a lockable center differential, and SR5/Limited were also sold in rear-drive 2WD. Confirm which one the specific truck is before you negotiate.
