Watchful

The 3rd-gen Tacoma is the dominant mid-size truck — legendary reliability and near-unlimited aftermarket support. The 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 has direct injection, which means potential carbon buildup at high mileage. The manual transmission has a well-known notchy engagement when cold. Frame rust on salt-belt trucks and catalytic converter theft are the primary concerns.

What the VIN tells you

The 3rd-gen Tacoma (2016–2022) comes in two powertrains — and which one you’re buying changes the inspection entirely. The 8th VIN digit is the fastest split: T = 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 (278 hp, by far the most common trim — SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro); G = 2.7L 2TR-FE I4 (159 hp, SR trim access cab only, older port-injection design, no GDI carbon concern). V6 buyers must verify two things the I4 doesn’t need: (1) TSB T-SB-0092-20 — the 6-speed automatic hunting/downshift fix; if the dealer can’t produce the software update record, budget $0–$200 for a dealer re-flash, or simply drive the truck on the highway for 10+ minutes and feel for repeated aggressive downshifts under light throttle. (2) GDI carbon buildup on the 2GR-FKS intake valves — high-mileage V6 trucks (80k+) may benefit from a $400–$800 walnut-blast cleaning. Model-year digit is position 10: G = 2016, H = 2017, J = 2018, K = 2019, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022.
