2024 Toyota Tacoma
SR / SR5 / TRD Sport / TRD Off-Road / Limited / TRD Pro / Trailhunter (4th gen AN160, 2024–present)
Monitor

The 4th-gen Tacoma is a complete redesign — new turbocharged 2.4T replacing the legendary but aging 3.5L V6, available iForce MAX hybrid, and TNGA-F platform. Too new for established long-term failure data. The transition from naturally-aspirated to turbocharged adds complexity; initial owner reports indicate some hesitation from the new powertrain. Excellent off-road capability with the Trailhunter and TRD Pro. Verify all NHTSA recalls on early 2024 builds.

What the VIN tells you

Unlike most single-engine trucks, the 4th-gen Tacoma’s VIN does separate the two powertrains, and you should use it: the 5th digit reads ‘D’ for the gas 2.4L T24A-FTS turbo four with the 8-speed automatic, while the i-FORCE MAX hybrid is listed as ‘C’ or ‘F’ in the community decoder tables that exist for a truck this new. That distinction is worth making by VIN because the hybrid is not reliably readable from the badges on a used lot — i-FORCE MAX was optional on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited and standard only on TRD Pro and Trailhunter, so trim alone will not tell you whether there is a 48-hp motor and a traction battery in the driveline. Two honest limits on this decode. First, the 4th gen also offered a 6-speed manual with the gas 2.4T, and because these characters encode the engine-and-transmission pairing rather than the engine alone, the character for that specific combination is not documented in the sources available here — confirm it, do not assume it. Second, and more important on a 2024: the highest-value thing this VIN does is not engine identification but recall lookup. This is the first model year of a complete TNGA-F redesign with an all-new turbocharged engine replacing the long-proven 3.5L V6, there is no established long-term failure record to inspect against, and a first-year truck’s service history is short enough that one open campaign is a large share of everything known about it. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and check whether the 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty is still live — on a redesign this new, remaining factory coverage is worth more to you than any single inspection finding, because it is the only thing standing between you and a failure mode nobody has documented yet.
