Low Risk

The 5th-gen RAV4 on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform is one of the bestselling vehicles in the US for a reason — it’s practical, efficient, and highly reliable. No chronic powertrain failures. The 2019 first-year model had minor software and infotainment complaints addressed by updates. The 2.5L Dynamic Force engine is excellent. There is no Takata inflator campaign on the XA50 — Toyota's RAV4 Takata scope is the 2004–2005 car — but a VIN recall check is still mandatory, because this generation has campaigns of its own.

Powertrain

Low Risk
Toyota’s new Dynamic Force four-cylinder. No widespread failure modes. Uses 0W-16 oil — confirm correct viscosity in maintenance history.
Cold-start: listen for any knock or rattle. Check dipstick — 0W-16 (or 0W-20) should be present. Any burnt smell = concern.
Est. cost: Routine maintenance Source: Toyota A25A-FKS reliability data
Low Risk
The new 8AT is smooth. Some early owners reported minor hesitation at low throttle which Toyota addressed with software.
Test throttle response from stop. Any hesitation can be fixed with dealer software update.
Est. cost: $0 software update Source: Toyota TSB

AWD System

Low Risk
The DTV-AWD system on higher trims uses a rear coupling. Test tight turns for vibration indicating fluid degradation.
Perform slow tight-radius turn to test rear coupling engagement. No grinding or vibration expected.
Est. cost: $150 coupling fluid service Source: Toyota AWD service schedule

Recall

Monitor
No RAV4 of this generation is in a Takata inflator campaign. Toyota's only RAV4 Takata recall is the 2004–2005 driver inflator, and the phrase “extended Takata recall” attached to an XA50 is a checklist error, not a campaign. The XA50 does have real campaigns of its own, which is why the VIN check still matters.
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you go and see the car. Any campaign that comes back open = do not purchase until the dealer has closed it. Recall work is always free, and completion is logged against the VIN, so a seller's word is not evidence.

Electrical & Interior

Low Risk
TSS-2.0 is standard on all 5th-gen RAV4s. Test the pre-collision warning on a quiet road.
Verify TSS-2.0 indicator lights on dash are clear. No calibration warnings.
Est. cost: $0 Source: Toyota standard
Low Risk
Entune 3.0 supports Apple CarPlay (2019 base trim does not; XLE+ does). Test connectivity.
Test CarPlay / Android Auto where applicable.
Est. cost: $0 Source: Toyota standard

Documentation

Low Risk
Young enough to have dealer history. One oil change interval missed is not the end of the world on this engine.
Request Carfax and service printout for maintenance verification.

VIN check
Severity: Informational
No XA50 RAV4 is in a Takata inflator campaign — Toyota's RAV4 Takata scope is the 2004–2005 model. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for the campaigns that do apply to this car. Remedy: Any open campaign is repaired free by a dealer.

What the VIN tells you

The 5th-gen RAV4 (XA50, 2019–2024) splits into two powertrains that the VIN's engine digit actually separates: the gas 2.5L A25A-FKS Dynamic Force four (203 hp, 8-speed automatic) and the RAV4 Hybrid's 2.5L A25A-FXS Atkinson-cycle four (219 hp combined, electronic CVT). Every gas 2019 RAV4 — LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, Limited — carries the A25A-FKS code, so within the gas lineup the 8th digit won't distinguish trims; it only tells you gas versus hybrid. Confirm which one you're looking at, because the hybrid is a different drivetrain (eCVT plus a rear electric motor for AWD) with its own inspection profile — and "CVT" advertised on a gas RAV4 is a red flag the listing is wrong, since the gas car uses a conventional 8-speed automatic. Priorities on every 2019 gas VIN: correct 0W-16 oil viscosity in the service history, plus fuel-pump and any other open-recall status checked by VIN (the Takata inflator recall does not reach this car).
