What the VIN tells you

The 2017 Prius Prime (model code ZVW52) came with exactly one powertrain — the 1.8L 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle hybrid four paired with the 8.8 kWh plug-in battery — so there is no engine-family choice to decode. Per NHTSA's Toyota Prius VIN coding, the 8th VIN digit identifies the 2ZR-FXE hybrid system rather than selecting between engines. The check that matters on a Prime is confirming the VDS decodes to a ZVW52 plug-in Prime and not a standard ZVW50/51 liftback — only the Prime carries the larger plug-in pack and ~25 mi of EV range, and mislabeled listings are common. Run the full VIN at nhtsa.gov before purchase to confirm any open campaigns are closed.
